I am talking about the full hook under the barrels of a B25 versus the more common bifurcated lumps found on almost all modern guns as well as classic O/U designs such as the Purdey/Woodward and Boss.

Historically Browning's design was assumed to be stronger, but with today's advanced machining technologies allowing the use of stronger steel alloys, is there any real advantage to this design?

I dont think so . like all designs it has its strengths and weaknesses. Beretta actions must be stronger due to the fact that there are no cut outs at the base of the actin but the trade off is that it has a much smaller bearing area on the hinges.
As the Browning action has been in production with little change since 1931 must say something for its durability although with heavier and magnum loads its bolting arrangement is not as efficient nor durable as the higher bolting of the Perazzi or Beretta .
Like all pieces of mechanical equipment guns have their limitations and it must be accepted that no one gun will suit all needs .

Many people assume there are great forces trying to push the barrels off the face, equal to the radial pressure loads. It ain't so. If it were, those tiny hinge and locking methods would be insufficient.

I think the bifurcated hinge allows the barrels to be packaged in a shorter height action. Originally, to possibly locate the upper barrel near where side by side barrels would be.

One distinct advantage is that the barrels on the B25 are of demi bloc construction which equates to chopper lump on a SxS, the hook being an integral component of the bottom barrel.

The design is classic, original quality is very good, and durability is well proven. The most outstanding feature, to me, is that it was mass produced and retailed at middle-class prices. There were several shades of extra finish for various levels of "pride of ownership"/collector interest. It is the go-to gun for classic O/U as Woodward and Boss O/U's are quite expensive.
