I've found a used Merkel .470 online. The dealer sent me some pics. Any idea what these marks are on the muzzle/crown?

I see small oxidation spots and some kind of imperfection in left muzzle crown at about 5 o'clock. Not sure what that blemish actually is.

I think that it is the way the light is picking out that spot & reflecting.
Enlarge the picture & see how the light angle is picking out the same spot on the other barrel. Also how the light angle is coming down from about ten o'clock & lining up on each surface.

Thank you to both of you, but what about the dark line connecting the 2 muzzles?

At first blush it looks like it got thrown in the back of the Land Rover on safari and knocked the North end around. Maybe just the light, but there appears to be similar though lesser damage to the right barrel crown as well, around 4:30 / 5 o'clock. Also some damage to the trapezoidal front site block, bottom left, above the 2 o'clock of the right barrel. The line connecting the barrels? Deep rust from improper storage muzzles down in a damp case/environment that couldn't be polished out?

Well, forgive me- been reading A. Conan Doyle again.

Mike

I think Mike from Big D is right. Both barrels could surely benefit from re-crowning, and the rest looks like just banging about damage.
