Here is the latest old double to follow me home. It seems to be in good mechanical condition. The numbers all match. There are problems with the wood that needs attention. The forend screw holes are stripped - an easy repair. The buttstock has a little play in it. I'll have to take it apart to see what's been done and what needs to be done before I shoot it.

The toe of the buttstock has been replaced by wood filler. I noticed a little wood filler here and there that fill dings. It shows of an old refinish job. No blueing or color case left to salvage.

Long range, I don't know if I'll love it as it is or if I'll want to restock it with nice wood and get gun reblued.

Are the tubes Steel, Damascus, or Twist? I have a couple of Twist guns, one of which is my current hunting favorite.

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

Steel.

I couldn't wait. In the early hours of the morning yesterday I was wide awake so I got up and grubbed out the stripped screw holes in the forend, made walnut pegs and glued them in with Acraglas. Mid-morning I got around to trimmings the pegs and putting the wood back on the hanger. The wiggle in the buttstock turned out to be the screw under the top latch needed another turn.

I shot it 8 times with my black powder loads. It shoots tight patterns.

It's a big brother to my Remington 1889 12 gauge. The 12 weighs in at 7-3/4 pounds and the 10 at 8-3/4 pounds. The 12 gauge is in better condition with mirror perfect bores. The bores on the 10 gauge are pitted.

Interesting about the tight patterns. On my hunting gun, the shot count on the tubes indicate modified and improved modified chokes. Since it was no doubt patterned with fiber wads, it probably patterns a little more tightly with plastic. It works pretty good on Iowa pheasants shot over my dogs.

I'm finding the chambers tight on the new to me 10 gauge. I've loaded mostly plastic hulls cut down from 3-1/2" magnum. The once fired hulls of course have been shot in different guns and were magnum loads. They haven't been a problem in my other 10 gauge - a Baker Syracuse. I've got a MEC 600 in 10 gauge and I have to make sure the brass is sized all the way to the rim. They fit fine and extract when so sized. I've not shot any newly loaded ammo.

The 10 gauge was made in 1895, the 12 in 1898.

I shot the old Remington 10 gauge with UMC brass hulls last Saturday at Cowboy Action Shooting match. We did good if you figure a knockdown went down every time a trigger was pulled.
