Hey guys, a friend stumbled across this gun at a local shop. The owner knows nothing about it. I can only find descriptions of two boxlocks made by Rigby and both sound more ornate than this. I can also find nothing of Rigby ever using a Greener crossbolt in a boxlock shotgun.

The top rib states "Sold by John Rigby and Co. 43 Sackville St. London W."

So... who made the thing? If I am reading proofs right it was made in the first part of the 20th century and proofed in London, correct? It's nice and light with decent wood, but clearly not ornate. Bottom of the barrels label them as Krupp.

I did not shoot the photos and they are all I have to go on, so apologies for the quality.

Thanks for any information.

Looks like some German proof marks on the gun, Crown over U, W I think. Also in one place there are two sets of 13/1 marks on it in different formats.

German gun Reproofed in London. Retailed by Rigby and the wording on the rib is carefully worded not to represent them as maker. Similar was found on some Holland & Holland guns: "Shot and Regulated by Holland...." These guns were made by Webley.

Thanks Joe, I knew it couldn't be a Rigby gun, good catch on the reproofing!

Any idea what value would be in pretty nice shape? Would it be comparable to a basic boxlock webley in the same condition?

In case the Rigby historian stumbles onto this post... the serial is 2237. Would love to know if there is anything on the books about it. Considering buying it. Quite light and balanced.

Really need to see the any marks fore of the flats & the water-table but it looks to be something like an E. Schmidt & Habermann Modell A.D. 1 or possibly an August Schüler Modell No. 1. For sure not a Sauer product, but the Kerner-Anson Body Action could have been sourced from a number of other mechanics including Kerner himself. Is the word Nitro stamped on the sides of the tubes?

With the overstamps, I'm curious if there was a template utilized to apply the proofmarks @ each respective proof facility?

Cheers,

It has been on commission for an outrageous (In my opinion) sum for a while at a local shop ($6k+), but they must have learned it was in fact not a true Rigby and have marked it down to ~$2500 or so.

They have a way to go before it will sell.
