Just got finished doing a job for a customer, her husband had passed away 5 years ago. As she was writing a check I noticed an old double hanging over a doorway in the mudroom. I mentioned that I was interested in old guns and asked if I could have a look and she said "sure, that's the oldest one, you probably wouldn't be interested in the others, they're newer, we still shoot them once a year, but they're in the closet."

The one over the door was a beat up, rusty Ithaca with the stock head gone on one side, a true wall hanger.

In the closet though, in back of the fishing rods, was a nicely redone 20ga. Parker VH, a minty Win. 16ga M24, and a pristine Prussian Sauer 16. (had a black pad though).

None for sale, but nice to know they're still out there. I got invited to her yearly clay shoot on T'giving morn!

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

Last year I was doing an estimate for someone near where my hunting club leases land for pheasant hunting. When I mentioned this to the client he told me that his father had hunted but he never really got into. As a matter of fact, he said, I have some of Dads old guns I keep meaning to do something with. So much for home improvement now I'm in gun mode with all kinds of "I found this '57 corvette in a barn" stories running through my head. After pulling out a few ratty pumps and an old .22 the treasure came out. An L.C. 12 ga. Ideal grade, the serial# puts at 1924. The gun had been restored 20 years ago and unfortunately the reciever was blued in the process. Other than that the gun was very nice. I asked the big question, how much? And he said I dunno $300 sound fair. I use it as my main pheasant gun and just love when somebody says nice gun where you get it.

Last year at the Vintage Cup there was a dealer letting a friend sell some guns. One was a Parker GH with damascus barels (30 inches) and the guy told me litterlly found it behind a kitchen door of a farm house he was doing some work on. It was very nice. The damascus pattern was about 80 percent and the case colors were a good 70 percent. The stock needed some attention and the dogs head buttplate needed to be replaced. At 1200 bucks it seemed like a good deal. I had just finished my own GH so the gun money fund was about bare. I wanted that one but I want a lot of things.

Regards, Gordon
