Had total replacement in June. Don't know why I waited so long. Do it!

I would highly recommend you have it done ONLY at a hospital that specializes ONLY in orthopedic surgery.... otherwise you stand a very good chance of infection within the hip (or knee, or wherever you have a prosthesis installed) and that can be PURE HELL.
Two family members recently went through immense problems due to infection within the prosthetic device and the tissue it was surrounded by..... and at highly regarded BOSTON hospitals too.

From dozens that I have witnessed, get the whole hip replacement, NOT plates, balls or pins alone. All the mess-ups I have seen have been those...the whole replacements usually work splendidly.

I haven't, but my dad and a sister both had knee and hip replacement. The convalescence of the hip was far easier on them than the knee and both had excellent results. Gil

My dad has had both hips replaced a number of years ago and no issues at all....he's going on 91 now. The PT afterwards was the hardest part of the replacements.

A good friend of mine had what he called a hip resurfacing about 4 years ago and he tells me it's doing great.

My family Dr told me a few months ago that I will need one, but if possible, put it off if I'm able, as long as possible due to my age (62) because they wear out and if a second is needed, it's a bit more problematic. Due to the pain and the limits my bad hip puts on me, I'm ready to get it done myself.

My Dad had a hip replacement, and he too regretted waiting as long as he did to get relief. Just do your research and find a great Orthopedic Surgeon who operates in a facility with a low rate of infection and complications. All Doctors and Hospitals are not created equal. My Dad had a great surgeon, but the hospital almost killed him by repeatedly giving him 100 times his normal dose of a medication. It was right there on his chart, but the brilliant staff couldn't figure out why his blood pressure kept bottoming out. Dad caught the error when he questioned the nurse about the pills she handed him.

Speaking of infections, artificial joints are notorious for becoming infected because they provide a warm dark environment for bacterial infections to settle, even long after the surgery. For this reason, some manufacturers of artificial joints have begun infusing the plastic portions with a controlled slow release antibiotic that is molded in. If I was in the market for a new joint, I think I'd be asking for one of those. I knew a lady who became very sick and eventually died after a blood infection from a cat scratch settled in her artificial knee joint.

My right hip was done 3 years ago and it is doing great. Mine was done in San Antonio by Jesse DeLee who is great. Mine was a lateral incision and not frontal which I believe is better although it is a longer recovery.

Regarding hip replacement infections, my sawbones directs me to take antibiotics an hour prior to going to the dentist. My dentist will not clean my teeth or do any other procedures until I have taken the antibiotics.

Apparently cleaning the teeth stirs up bugs that can get to the joint.
