There's a scene involving shooting clays in Alfred Hitchcock's 1934 movie The Man Who Knew Too Much. The sequence shows the end of a shootoff between a lady and a gentleman(?), each taking shots with the same SXS shotgun. The scene is placed early in the film, from approximately 4:05 to 6:15 in the youtube video posted below.

What shotgun is shown in the film?

The IMFDB (Internet Movie Firearms Data Base) does not identify the shotgun, noting only that it is "a hammerless double-barreled shotgun with a distinctive trigger guard." Other firearms used in the movie are ID'd with some specificity.

The gun does not appear to have a top lever, although a safety button can be seen. Very probably the gun is European. The filming took place in Switzerland and England. Hitchcock did not move to the USA until 1939.

I cannot find that this shotgun has been the subject of any threads in this or any other forum. My apologies in advance if I somehow missed it.

Below are portions of two frames from the movie that show the gun about as clearly as possible. Further below is a link to the full movie on youtube.

Thanks for any assistance in identification.

To me, that looks more like a snap action underlever, as best I can see it. The Robust linked at GI has a straight extension off the trigger guard rather than a curved one. But then maybe they offered more than one type.

And the woman doesn't have her head down on the stock.

I'd put my money on a Henry Atkin snap underlever.
Given the full sidelock form it's not an early Gibbs and Pitt.
Appropriate to the age of the film.

She hasn't acquired focus on the target yet. Proper premount technique is that you premount, check your mount by looking down the rib, then lift the head slightly to acquire the target. I think she has great form ........ what I can see of her. wink

i think you nailed it, CZ.

Only thing is, the lever is not shaped exactly like it. More of a gradual curve in the one in the old pics, I think.
