Thanks Doug. I almost bought an Ithaca 37 for the slugs and buck (and other sensible reasons) until I discovered it had a LH safety. On another thread I learned that the safety change is not all that difficult, so I probably won't take a chance on the Sauer.

You are welcome, if you do decide to spare your fine Sauer from the slugs and buck, you will not be sorry.
I moved from Texas to Illinois a few years ago and the last two deer I harvested were with my classic 12 "bore" Remington 870 Express Combo double gun with phosphate finish, with fine pressed checkering on some kind of wood (OK by "bore" and “double gun” I am just kidding folks, but I couldn't resist, it is in fact a 12 gauge with both a slug and a shot barrel…clearance priced at Wal-Mart for $264).
Even though I own several very fine deer rifles, regrettably , shooting slugs isn't just an experiment in my present situation. Pressures and recoil are not the same, I have never shot 16 gauge slugs or buck, but I have shot both out of the 12 gauge and these loads do “kick.” The “kick” (not chamber or barrel pressures) is what does your stock in.
Assuming you have good reason to want to shoot those shells, for roughly 10% (or less) of the cost of having your Sauer re-stocked you can get good, used, 16 gauge like the Ithaca, more suitable for the loads you purchased.
