How does an extractor for rimless cartridges work in break action guns? It's a curiosity of mine, and I haven't been able to find any pictures of one, and I can't work out a simple way to do it. Thanks in advance if someone can tell me.

Ruger No. 1's and NEF's use an axially loaded spring. It 'snaps' in the groove on closure.

My Marrochi 222Rem/12ga combo gun had a spring loaded pin in the extractor. Others I've had, had a loaded spring wire loop. All are a pain to deal with, slipping past the pin or wire while loading.
I've gone to Rimmed cartrideges for my combos and drillings, 5.6x50R Mag, 22 Sav. Highpower(5.6x52R), and 6.5x58R Sauer for coyote hunting and 7x57R and 9.3x72R for big game
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I don't really have a specific cartridge in mind, one of my long term goals is to build a double rifle....well means allowing more than just one, I'm just trying to expand my knowledge base. Though if I was going to for a rimless cartridge I'd probably chose the 7.62x39r, or the .223. Small cartridges, easy to find ammunition for and such.

Yes, you can build a double rifle that works with rimless cartridges.
Sometimes the simplest solution is best, stick with rimmed cartridges and avoid the additional minor challenge of rimless cartridges.
You are building a double rifle, saving on ammo costs is a false economy. If ammunition economics is important to you there are a number of common rimmed cartridges you can choose from.
You can regulate the gun for a factory cartridge, but many double rifle guys go ahead and create a custom load to get the best accuracy.

Building on a fairly common rimmed case would be ideal. The 30-30 case comes instantly to mind. Starting with the 219 Zipper, 25-35, 7mm Waters, 30-30, 32-40, 32 Win Spl 375 Win and 38-55 in factory loads and a smorgasbord of wildcats, most useful the 35-30.
A fast twist 219 Zipper would allow you to use readily available inexpensive .224 bullets even take downs from surplus 5.56(223) ammo, same with the 30-30 plus there are a number of bulk cast bullets available. The 30-35 will let you use 38/357 bullets and you could have a chamber adaptor made to shoot 38/357 ammo in a pinch.
Sounds like a fun project
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

huntingsgr8, If you especially like 7.62x39, and .223, you can duplicate them with rimmed cases. The .303 Savage case will make rimmed 7.62x39, and 5.6x50R cases will make .223rimmed cases. In my opinion, however, Oskar has the best solution. The 35-30/30 he mentioned, can duplicate 9.3x72R ballistics, in a shorter case. Mike
