Hi from a 77 year old NEWBIE. 50 years ago I purchased a 20 gauge Spanish SxS brand new, for $20.00, from a retailer. WHY 20 bucks ? An opportunity, it was stamped as a 12 gauge. This was my go to for PA. doves, cottontails, pheasants and an occasional grouse. My huntin' buds named it 'meat hunter'. With CYL & IMP MOD chokes, get it up quick and then done. It is (correction) was a 'meat hunter', but handing this down to my grandson, it must be more of a Lady. The last 4 years I have been an astute student in the town of Eibar Spain's GunMakers, Eibar proof house and the culture of it's fascinating workmanship. I am trying my best to write a journal, to go with the 20gauge to my grandson. I have just refinished this 20 gauge. Mistakes ? Absolutely, but now a Lady. I need your help and thanks fossilized

Welcome. That sounds like a grand artefact with a story well worth the telling, and worth passing down.

What a fortunate grandson, not solely because he will be gifted a shotgun, but because it was his grandfather's shotgun and because his grandfather loves him enough to write a journal to leave him as well. I began my bird hunting journal many years ago. Having three grandsons, I will probably not make a decision on who will get it, but it will most likely be my youngest son who is the Dad of the two hunting grandsons.
Welcome to the bbs, JohnBoy. You'll fit right in here.

Great first post JohnBoy. Welcome! What brand gun was the meat hunter before you civilized her? Just let your memories fill the pages of your Grandson's journal; it will flow naturally and have great meaning to him and probably his own sons. The gun should last another generation or three at least...Geo

Did you actually go to Spain and study gunmaking in Eibar? If so, you have lots of posting to do here on this BBS because I'll guarantee you this group would all love to hear the whole story. Perhaps you can incorporate some of your posts here into your journal...Geo

Thanks for the welcome. Answering a couple of questions.
Geo.Newbern---No, I never went to Eibar Spain. I got there through trial and error, but my research put me there. Geo. again----What brand gun ? It is stamped 'Falcon Model 137 Ranger. 12 gauge 2 3/4", but it is a 20 gauge. It is a 'meant to be hunted shotgun (low end), but a former Importer of Spanish shotguns said, "it still has 40 years in it to be hunted"---Mechanically sound. He valued the shotgun in a soft market. I was stunned, but value is incidental to my goal---The DARN journal is Priceless.
It has 3 sets of initials. An E.A. (or F.A.) on Rt under Barrel. This upset my applecart. I thought it was MAKER, Eusebio Arigaza. Now NF pops up in 2 spots. NF = Echave Arizmendi. Two spots may dictate the MAKER. I said 'MAY'. SZ under fore end = Sylvestri Zamacola.
A question---Posting pictures. Allowed ? or what do you do with pictures. Photobucket may be the answer. My pics are there. fossilized

lET'S TRY THIS geo. Some history: almost a first for me in restoration. 1st time looked like I used a paintbrush. Did better this time. A critical eye may tear this apart---Doesn't matter ! It has a bit of glamour. I did a 2 tone (pistol grip), used Birchwood Casey, boiled linseed oil and Poly. My best work was getting the rusty blue patina (is that spelled right) off without damage to engraving. I awarded myself an A on that part. Click on link for pics (I pray it works) fossilized PS: I will add before and after pics if this works. Footnote: Some pics will go in my grandson's journal. http://s304.photobucket.com/user/johnw1940/library/FALCON%20MODEL%20137%20RANGER?sort=3&page=1that worked---another link of marks / condition before refinish. Remember the journal---contribute and thanks johnboy http://s304.photobucket.com/user/johnw1940/library/?sort=4&page=1
