When did LC Smith stop making the 3-position safety? I was reading a book and the author stated only the pre-1913 guns had it, yet I have it on my 1929 FW-16.

According to the L C Smith Collectors Ass'n site, the latest recorded three-position safety is:

" Serial Number 129253 (May 28, 1930), 16 gauge Field Grade submitted by Ron Cook."

The main reason was for safety. When it first came about in 1886 with the Syracuse L.C. Smith's it was for Trap shooting which was just coming into it's own. Then as now if you called for the bird and forgot to push the safety to on, you lost the bird.
You can see how this could become a problem with the 3 position safety in not remembering to push the safety forward to the off position.
