Does anyone have an idea what the original part colors were. Should the frame and fore end iron be case colored ? Trigger guard hot blue, rust blue, nitre blue ? Triggers, top lever, hammers. How did they come from the factory?

I'm in the process of refinishing mine, too. Doing the wood now. Barrels are at Mike Orlen's being evaluated for the possibility of honing some pitting in the bores. If that turns out successfully they will go out to be refinished, next.

Great question!

According to the current DGJ Remington man, an 1889 Grade 3 had all parts color hardened, including all screws, trigger guard, hammers, foreend metal. Not sure about the triggers, I forgot to ask about those.

All parts case colored on my 1882 and 1889. They are both mint guns, but the triggers are no longer bright case colored, but a bit tarnished, although it appears that they were case colored. Examination in good light with a magnifier may show the colors better.
