I found a Ithaca NID 16ga thats in decent shape at a local shop. The owner wants $780 for it, problem for me is that it's choked Full and modified. Well I assuming its modified because I can clearly see the "F" on the left side of the face but I can't find any choke marking on the other side.
Two questions,
Does $780 seem like a fair price?
Seeing how this will most likely always be a shooter and not a collector would be Ok to open up the chokes to something more appropriate for grouse hunting?
Thanks for your input

The F marking on the area (receiver water table?) means the grade F- Field. Ithaca chokes are designated on the barrel flats, using a numerical system: ergo: 1 cylinder/skeet choking 2 modified choke 3 improved modified and 4- full choke.

You can also date the NID series Ithacas from either the presence of the cocking indicators on the receiver topside- from about 1925-to 1933- the NID series had those, if the pins are up, the hammer is cocked- if the pin is down flush, the hammer is down-- After 1933, Ithaca deleted this feature-- Hope this helps-- RWTF

You can also date an NID by going to the home page of this BB.

I read NIB as new in the box first time through and thought you'd found a real deal! But less than $800 for a NID in decent shape, regardless of chokes, is still a good price. If you want more open chokes . . . Field Grade and not in close to new condition . . . go ahead and have them opened.

There are at least four versions of the Field Grade New Ithaca Double. As Introduced in 1926 the receiver had the roll=stamped dog and company name on the sides of the receiver.

After a while the folks on the factory floor began adding some engraved stars to the receiver --

but the stars didn't begin being shown in the Ithaca Gun Co. catalogs until 1929.

For 1935, Ithaca Gun Co. dropped the cocking indicators, decorated the receiver border with squiggly line engraving and fitted it up with a much nicer stock and forearm.

After WW-II a goodly number of Field Grade NIDs escaped the factory without the squiggly line engraving --

and they usually had a much smaller patch of grip checkering, more like the early NID Field Grades.

That last version of the NID also had a snap-on forend vs the Deeley latch on the earlier ones. It's the version Steve Lamboy copied when he brought out the Ithaca Classic Doubles.

Yes. From 1935 onwards, the extractor guns had the Baker J-Spring snap-on/-off forearms. The ejector guns got a combination of the Baker J-Spring along with a lever actuated tilting block lock similar to a Parker Bros. forearm latch.
