I have a 1907 Lefever H that is not setting the cocking indicators when the chamber is closed. I plan on having a gunsmith look at it but I'm curious if anyone knows what is going on. Thanks in advance.

LeFever cocking indicators are a simple, flat spring powered button that is forced out of the sideplate by the cocking of the hammer. The sideplates on LeFever's are held in place by a through screw and a small lip on the front edge. I'd look before I spent money particularly since most current gunsmiths have never seen a real LeFever. The cause could simply be the flat spring has worked out of the cut in the button. First, the cocking indicators are pushed out when the hammers are cocked. Whether the barrels are closed does not matter. Are the hammers cocking (do they fire)? The purpose of the springs is to move the indicators in when the hammers are fired. The indicators should be moved out, when cocked, whether the springs are in place or not.

The hammers are not cocking or firing and the indicators are not moving out.

My first guess then, is that the pin in the underlug, that drives the cocking hook, is missing.

Thanks for all the info. Is this something a local gunsmith can address? or do I need to send it off to someone who specializes in this gun?

Gary- Where are you located? Perhaps one of the members can steer you to a smith who can help. If it is the pin in the lug, it should be simple to fabricate one from a drill bit.

I took mine to Keith Kearcher in Bend, Oregon with a simular problem. It was quite reasonable and fixed in two to three weeks. As mentioned above, I've had guns at gunsmiths for years which did not get fixed or were fixed wrong at very hig prices.

To the best of my knowledge all H grade Lefevers were built on the Single large cocking hook type. Open the bbl & look to see if the cocking hook is being lifted. It should fit up in a groove in the bbl lug & is lifted by a pin through it, which is the one mentioned by Jim as the most probable cause. If it is missing you will see a small hole through the lug, or posibably the center is sheared off. In either case, the bbls will need to be removed, the cocking hook carefully pried up to cock the gun before a new pin can be inserted. Any competent gunsmith or machinist should be able to fit a new pin from drill rod.
