Not far from Mstic is Old Say Brook. North Cove Outfitters has some interesting firearms from time to time. For a great place to eat try:

Excellent Italian. Try the Hot Rocks which is seafood served on a hot rock and you cook it to taste.

Campbell's Hardware in Groton, Conn. was a pretty decent place to hang out. He was on Long Hill Road, about 5 to 7 miles from Mystic. Don't know if he is still in business.

I used to build submarines in Groton in the mid 80's. Campbell's did have a selection of vintage doubles but I never bothered looking at them cause I couldn't afford them. If they are still there and selling guns I don't know. On the west side of the Thames river just south of Norwich was a shop called Fort Shantok trading post. They came up with some interesting older guns at times. A little further north in Jewet city was a shop in an old mill converted to a mall called Jewet city sports. It was a nice shop. This was a long time ago so I don't know if they are still there but check the phone book. In Rode Island is Robin Hollow out fitters.

Sorry I missed this before your visit. All the shops Tanky mentions are gone. There is a new shotgun specialty shop in Old Saybrook called The Grouse Perch, and Ron's Guns in East Lyme survives, but most of the small gun stores have shut down in the past 10 years. Competition from big stores and the internet, and disrectionary income being sucked into the two Indian casinos have made this a very difficult area for any small retail shop.
North Cove Outfitters in Old Saybrook is a good store (sort of a mini LL Bean) and there is a well-stocked gun shop in Westerly RI.

what years did you work at EB? I was there from 79-82, Welder, 1st Class mechanic when I left. Worked Tridents mostly. Nuke certified for most processes.

It's Tanky who worked at EB. I grew up around here - live in East Lyme.

Brian, I worked at EB from 82-85 and built 688's on the north ways my hole time there. I'm now an NTL Boilermaker and work tank jobs and out of local 28&13. They generally have enough work to keep me in the Delaware valley most of the time. I have to say that my experience there welding has done me well in this trade but the amount of time twisted up like a pretzel in some hole is starting to take it's toll on my body. I'm sorry to hear about those small gunshops folding. I remember old man Campbell sitting in Campbells hardware store. He was missing one or both legs,I don't remember. I do remember thinking that he and his hardware store were a throwback to the old days. I didn't think then that it could last. Home depot or Lowes probably did them in just like so many in our area.

Just keep away from the bar down on the river where Sean Penn and the Savage Brothers hung out in the movie. KBM
