Too, now I do see that it is a H. Roux underlever opener with a toplever selector between bullet & shot?

The recess in the wood more than likely was to accommodate a hinge for the access paddle of the metal buttplate. Although I do not think it is the case here, but often during difficult times, folks would hollow out the wood under the buttplate & hide their valuables when fleeing trouble.

There are original 1st pass proofmarks on the tubes which were applied when individually they were submitted to the Zella - Mehlis Proof Facility. So it must have been made in the early 1890s??

What are the marks under your thumb, forward of the forend hanger?

Here's a somewhat similar Krieghoff cartridge trap but this one has a barrel insert in it. But yours hinges in the same manner.

Oberhammer was a prolific drilling designer.... This one sort of resembles yours... A little of half way down....

Couple more pics of those areas. Saw the 54 stamp and thought it was a year stamp, guessing since it's later than the repair stamps I read it wrong.

More than likely the >>54<< is an assembly number. Have you noticed it any other location??

[Linked Image from thumbs2.imgbox.com]

These touchmarks are the preliminary proofmarks on the 1st pass which designate exactly the purpose of the tube:
Eagle Crown over G(Geschoss) denotes a solid projectile tube and Eagle(covered by a rib) Crown over S is a tube destined for Schrot(shot). These marks would have been applied whilst the components were singular pieces.

The touchmark of >>Crown over N(Nitro)<< coupled with >>Bl. G.<<, which is Blei Geschoss or Lead projectile.

None of these point to a maker as they are pure Zella - Mehlis Proof Facility marks, so research would have to focus on other such examples of P. Oberhammer and see exactly who he sourced from the majority of his wares.
