I recently traded for a fine English gun that I would like to know more about. Especially when it was made. It is a Charles Hellis 12bore #708. I bought the gun mostly because it is a fine gun and came to my shoulder perfectly with the proper fit for my 15"LOP.

There is a nice history of Charles Hellis & Sons here
https://ammoterra.com/company/charles-hellis-sons

David Ingles acquired the firm about 1994 but I could not find an internet contact, other than LinkedIn
http://www.hellis.com/ is not active

We could provide a range of DOM (and more information) with a full size in focus close up of the barrel flats

I had read the information from ammoterra and have seen other listings on Guns International to determine that it was made between 1897 and 1920. I have no way of posting a photo and don't know how as my computer knowledge is lacking. It does have nice damascus barrels and 2 1/2" chambers

The 1896 - 1904 proof marks would be 1 1/8 oz. MAX or MAX M
The 1904 - 1925 1 1/8 oz. (Usually followed by 'Shot' but not uniformly)
After 1925 simply 1 1/8 oz. and the chamber length marked
Are the barrels marked NITRO PROOF?

The barrels are not marked except 12G. The other marks I am not familiar with. I got the gun from a professional gunsmith who specializes in double guns. He recommended that I shoot no heavier than 1oz loads in it and I can agree because the recoil is heavy enough with 1oz Gamebore Regals. My reloads will be much lighter than that.

The top line and bottom line are missing or worn off of my gun and the other marks are well worn. The name on the top of the rib shows the 119 Edgeware road address
