There was a thread here some time ago about artificially figuring plain stock wood with magic markers and similar, and then finishing or refinishing. As I recall a person or two who are good at that were named in the thread. If anyone can refresh me on this I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Silvers

I've been told that Joe Shiozaki, of JS Gunstocks, is very good at it. Look him up on Google.

I do it with pigment based stains. Marker has a tendency
to be diluted or broken down by the finishing products,
ruining the effect.

George Flame used to match grain with a paint brush and he could turn white pine into feather crotch. OK, he was just very good. Another great Parker guy gone.

Here are two pictures of the best extension and grain matching that I've ever seen. This work was done in England about 3 years ago.

Thomas Jefferson's home Monticello, had I remember a few doors in his bedroom that he supposidly had done using a feather and made it look fantastic.
The art is still done on furniture and a stock is a nice piece of furniture just like what Doug has shown.

You may wish to do a search for 'faux' finishing.

There was also an article in Fine Woodworking some years ago on the techniques & process.

Ithaca did it for years on their 600-series O/Us and their 200- and 280-series SxSs. Norvasc sales went through the roof as a few guys began to refinish the faux stuff and saw what was underneath. I remember a very skilled smith who also built stocks showing me one he had just stripped bare, dried, and was in the process of applying his own "Crayola" finish. From orange crate slat to fine European walnut in about an hour and a half! KBM
