Seems like I remember the Southgate name. Here is a Highwall he did. Smoothest Highwall single set trigger action I've seen. Can someone provide history?https://postimg.cc/gallery/wvM537x

Looks like a pistol grip conversion with the buttstock attached with wood screws.Probably why it broke at the at the poorly inletted tangs.
Have you removed the stock?
Where Is it marked Southgate?

He was well known for building muzzle loaders if I remember correctly.

That's where I remember the name! Royland Southgate, a prolific muzzleloader builder. From here in Tennessee as well!

A really nice piece of wood, with great figure in it! Must be an old varmint rifle at one time?

1990 Gun Digest Annual has an article on The Guns of Royland Southgate. I believe there was also an earlier article in The American Rifleman.

Steve was about right about the way the stock was attached. Rather than use the standard through screw to hold the two tangs together, he inserted a steel block top to bottom and screwed machine screws into the top and bottom screw holes. I don't know why he bothered. Winchester's way was just fine.

I agree that the Winchester tang to tang bolt is just fine, if properly installed with a tapered tang bolt and tapered hole. Sometimes these are converted to though bolt attachment that I don't see as any improvement. That fat forend is also something from the 50's~60's that I find unattractive and unecessary. High and Low Wall Winchester rifles were always my favorite projects. A nephew of R.Southgate showed up recently on the Longrifle forum with some info.
