So after many years I finally found a good 20 ga Win 21. Really nice wood especially for a field grade. My expert friend believes it is a replacement stock, which is fine by me. I wanted 30" barrels but settled for 28. Stock dimensions are very close to perfect. It has a leather covered pad that looks like what Win offered but appears to be glued on, as there are no holes or plugs. Also it is quiet butt heavy. I'd like to add 3/8" lop and balance it better but kind of hate to mess with this pad. Does anyone know how exactly it is attached?

I had a similar situation with a Perazzi---the pad was glued in place. The smith cut it off just behind the pad and then, installed a new pad with screws. CSMC sell Win replacement pads. You can add a spacer to get your proper LOP. Bill

Sounds like you have a Winchester leather covered pad style 1 ,2or three the pad is more than likely not glued on, but the leather is .the Winchester pad is kind of unique the way they leather covered it. It was either a square edge , round edge or just a face, but that Leather is glued , youmay be able to peel it off and put it back on. That would be very difficult. I’ve never seen that done successfully. You can reapply piece of leather or just leave it alone after you do your alteration . I use to work at Winchester / USARA and then Connecticut Shotgun, I think if you show us a picture Can tell you exactly what it is and again you may be successful peeling it off carefully and putting it on, but I have never seen that happen

You cannot put the same pad on after you add to the LOP, the butt is larger the farther you get from the breach. If you add to the LOP, just have a new pad fit and leather faced.

I also would "hate to mess with this pad", and wouldn't mess with it if it were mine. If it is a Winchester style installation, the pad was installed the normal way with screws and plugs and the leather installed over it. Pictures would give us a better idea.

I don't have a photo host site any longer, but the leather wraps around the pad completely. There is a thin red spacer and then thin black spacer between pad and stock. I can text anyone a photo. I am going to try and get used to shooting it as is.

Nitrah;
Since you do not have a host for photos, send Gunsmith Jim a Private Message with your email address and he can email you and you then send to him a photo by email.

That's the Win pad you see between the leathers' edge and the black spacer.
