Ed does a turkey need to be flying? To be considered sporting.

There is a rather interesting post on FB from a pair of guys that shot a limit each of grouse over a mastiff using Contender pistols. They shoot them on the flush no less. Pretty impressive, but not something I want to try. I love the mastiff part though. They would be great grouse dogs if they were interested in the game. He has also shot pheasants over the dog, though I don't know that he used the Contender for that. maybe this url will get to the photo https://scontent.ffod1-1.fna.fbcdn....47IUgBb0lhPjPIxDV6OWFJWQ&oe=67201A66https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10226645508224720&set=pcb.3904103023200874

ground sluicing eliminates the fair chase, sporting element from the hunting experience in my opinion.

Ground sluicing? I never heard the term but assume that translates into shooting game birds on the ground, with the exception of turkey and capercallie. Doesn't seem quite sporting to me.

Forget sporting, ground sluicing is not so safe for the dogs. Don't do that around my pets.

If no one's watching what does it matter?

I've been bird hunting for 67 years and haven't shot one on the ground or out of a tree in that time. I never saw my dad shoot one on the ground or out of a tree either. I've spent a lot of time when no one was looking. Just say'in.

Thinking of a 410 and those hellishly expensive tungsten cartridges then shooting for food at sitting birds starts to make some sense. The same holds for single shot muzzle loaders and air weapons. Personally I hunt only what I like to eat, at numbers that will be eaten and not shoved in the freezer. never what offers "challenging"shots.
From what I read and from seeing paintings of hunters in the flintlock period, ground slucing was probably the way to hunt back then. Shooting flying"" was a later development. Using nets with setters was a form of ground slucing, since it involved sitting birds, and was probably more deadly than shooting, yet considered "sporting".
