Just returned from the National Grasslands hunting prairie chickens with my son in South Dakota It was a bucket list bird for him. Conditions were extremely dry, temps were hot and the grass was not very tall. Lots of hunters and the birds were really spooky, sometimes flushing at 200 yards or more! It's a far cry from the last time I went 10 years ago. But we still had fun shooting three different hammerguns from Purdey, William Powell & sons, and Boss & Co. Most were shot with black powder.

Love it! Public land hunting at its finest. Minutes from my place in SD. I have some private land I hunt in the area but still hit the grasslands now and again. Glad to hear you and your son had a good trip.

Beautiful birds and sunset!

Super with your hammer guns smile

My son and I were there for 4 days starting the first Monday of the season. We saw a lot of birds, but mostly in flocks flying from one place to another. I was disappointed in not getting us closer to more of them when we were following the dogs in the field.

Agree about a lot of hunters.

We also encountered a LOT of young pheasants along the roads as we were driving from one spot to another. They must have had one heckuva pheasant hatch.

Was there on Thursday, must have just missed you. We decided to hunt the prairies one day instead of the pheasant sloughs. FIL shot his first prairie chicken at age 81 and was very excited! I had two chances at sharpies, one realistic that I flubbed and one unrealistic where I just enjoyed a large flush at 70 yards.
