'I've been badly bitten by a 12ga Merkel DT gun, particularly when spending a day shooting heavy pheasant loads. At one point I added a rubber bumper behind the trigger guard, and this actually made the discomfort worse, as it further lengthened the distance between my middle finger behind the guard and index finger on the front trigger.
The gun also has choke tubes, so my solution was to reverse the usual trigger order, putting the open choke on the left barrel and REAR trigger. And I took off the bumper. Since I usually need fewer second shots than first shots, this reduces impacts on my middle finger. I now haven't bled for a couple seasons!
