Greetings everyone. I have four drills three of which are pre-WW2. One is a Sauer drilling: 2 3/4s 16x16X30-06. I was wondering with a modern drilling if it’s ok to shoot full metal jacketed shells?

Kurt,
It should be OK for the gun, but most jurisdictions prohibit them for hunting.

I don't know that I would shoot AP bullets in it though.

Just a note on 30-06 Springfield AP rounds: It appears that it is illegal to move the bullets to something like 308 Win. That was what the FBI charged that Cat that loaded the ammo that the LA Shooter bought. The LA shooter asked for a larger amount and said Cat went home & pulled 30-06 Springfield bullets and moved them over to 308 Win.

Just a note if you ever think about moving AP bullets to another cartridge.

I’m not a rifle guy. I don’t know what AP cartridges are. I was asking if you can shoot full metal jacketed rounds through a Sauer drilling made in the 1960s

Kurt,
AP cartridges/bullets are military armor piercing cartridges that have a hardened core (I have used the cores from both 30 and 50 caliber AP bullets as center punches). They are not as common now as they were 50 years ago when WW2 surplus ammo was being released. 30-06 AP ammo was accurate enough that it was used as substitute match ammo from time to time. Liberals didn't like it, claiming it was used for "cop killing" although I don't recall any incident of that happening.

But if you are just talking about bullets from normal G.I. FMJ ammo you can shoot it but you can't hunt with it. I suppose the Brits would call it full patch or solids.
