I have convinced my checkering friend to try to do some English checkering for me. He thinks he has everything but a single flat cutter to make the checkering uniform. He thinks is should be about 3/8” long with a cutter depth of about .010”. He will pin it to his single checkering handle. Where can I buy the cutter?

years ago, i did a complete reading of this discussion index - starting at the back and coming forward. made notes of items/subjects of interest/relevance to me in a spiral binder....that goes about 30 pages.

somewhere buried in that compilation is a note from someone whose name i do not recall - about recutting flat top checkering using short sections of hacksaw blades, adapted to use in conventional handles. in the past i have set-up several pilkington view-thru handles with sections, about 3/4" in length, and have decently recut several old guns. they can be set to cut either push, or pull, and can be easily obtained in various teeth-per-inch.

now-a-days i'm too shaky to be comfortable trying to do such things any longer - and i was never brave enough to attempt cutting new checkering either...

Short pieces of hacksaw blade work wonderfully.
Grind off the wavy set, and taper the teeth a little while you're at it.
Recently recut a little single barrel, and it turned out splendidly!
I believe a lot flat top checkering has been done with a saw in years past.

fab500,

Une image vaut mille mots.... espacement réglable.... ingénieux.

(Translation for Argo44: A picture is worth a thousand words.... adjustable spacing.... ingenious.)
