I’ve had a few pads put on by a very good local guy. After the pad has been cut and fit on the stock, he tapes off the wood and clamps it in a vice. He uses strips of of wet/dry sandpaper to work the edge of the pad down. He starts with 220 and works his way down to finer grits. He sprays Pledge furniture polish on the pad as he uses the sandpaper. End result is a nice smooth finish. I will also treat my pads with Armour All to clean and improve patina. I’m sure there are many other methods just as satisfactory

A wipe down with French Polish is what I use. A tip from a gun tinkerer much smarter than I.

better yet, remove that ugly, heavy condom from your gun and replace it with a proper light weight wood extension...

well John, your post is an epitome of personal rudeness and intolerance for views different than your own...
heavy, solid pads change the balance of a gun and well, they are jes plan ugly ...
in my opinion...which may be different than others here...

Some of the old school guys used to suggest a light coat of Vaseline and then buff it.

Rub it with Balistol periodically with a soft cloth.
PS. If I need less then an inch a period correct pad is the way togo. Wood extensions imo look awful, less someone like Mark Larson makes it look right.
