I have a wonderful little Hiwall, built by the great John Oberlies. It is chambered for the .219 Donaldson Wasp, probably the short version. I purchased a box of .219 DW from a commercial reloader. They were apparently the long version, because they won't fit. I finally got one into the chamber and fired it, but it was a struggle. I don't want to go through hoops to find out what I have or to load for it. Is there a gunsmith who could rechamber it for the long DW, rebore it to 30-30, or rebarrel it to some caliber where I wouldn't have to change the extractor? I want a store bought caliber if possible, hence the 30-30 idea. A gunsmith in Maryland or southeastern Pennsylvania would be preferred. I would rather hear directly from that gunsmith rather than contact information. Thanks.

JES reboring in Oregon is often recommended. I used him some years ago for a 32 Win Spc to .38-55 conversion. It took 11 days from my doorstep in Iowa to return to me, and those 11 days spanned Christmas.

JES only rebores to .35 class calibers. Still looking. Thanks. I would like to stick to a rimmed cartridge that is compatible with my extractor and store bought ammo. 30-30 is on my mind.

Any competent gunsmith can rechamber the rifle. Chamber reamers can be easily rented. For your rifle, the rechambering merely involves slightly lengthening the chamber.

Actually, if you are somewhat mechanically inclined, you could rent a reamer and rechamber the rifle yourself. It is that easy.

However, before rechambering, if you are looking for a round that you can buy in a store, then your suggestion of reboring to 30/30 makes more sense. I suggest you call Norman Johnson (High Plains Re-boring & Re-rifling) at 701.448.9188.

Other calibers that you could have your rifle rebored to are the 25/35 and the 38/55. Ammo wouldn't be on Walmart's shelf but can be found via the internet.

The 25/35 is listed as a 6.5x52r. (It was adopted by numerous Continental rifle makers). It is a fairly mild cartridge and fun to shoot.

You should check the dimensions of the 25-35 against those of the Wasp, the 25-35 might not clean up the wasp chamber at the shoulder area.
