I still have my Savage model 220 20 ga. , which was my first shotgun. In good used condition, it cost me two weeks of my paper route earnings. I think they are higher quality and better looking than the Ithaca Levever Long Range Single shot. The cyanide case colors seem to hold up well on them.
At under 6 lbs., the recoil was noticeable with 1 oz. field loads , but nothing I couldn't handle at age12-13. It never had any malfunctions. However, mine is choked very full, so it was a bit hard to hit with, especially at closer ranges. I passed up one in 16 ga. at a gun show a couple years ago. It was only $90.00, and I'm a bit sorry I talked myself out of it, even though I certainly didn't need it.

Tut, I've had 220s (break, not bolt action as made today) in .410, 20 and 16 ga. The .410 and 20 shared the same frame with the .410 being considerably heavier than the 20. To accommodate the .410 barrel, the chamber was as thick as an old coke bottle to keep the striker firing pin centered. It is truly hammerless as it has a striker rather than internal hammer. It is a decent gun, nothing fancy. As James noted, an English game gun has overall more beauty. Having a top tang safety is a feature. Another consideration is the Beretta M412. It is a folding break action, but of high quality. Here's mine made in 1954 with a shared limit of two guns. 4lbs., 13 oz. Don't want a gun with a hammer. Started my youth using a H&R Topper in 12 gauge an have bad memories. Cold fingers and hard hammers were not a good combination. Both the above have tang safeties. Like a tang safety. The best way to get over bad memories and phobias is to confront them, tut. That's what I remember G. You could consider a Webley 100 semi-hammerless gun. I have a 16 bore one, which I call my Covid gun - I bought it sight unseen during the Covid lockdown. It was made in 1964 but never used. The colour case-hardening is superb. The semi-hammerless design requires only slightly more effort than sliding off a safety catch.
It is built on the 12 bore action, has a 2 3/4" chamber with a 30" barrel and weighs 6 lbs 6 ounces, and so handles and swings like a double.
I agree with Parabola about the 1 : 96 rule for gun weight. However it is full choke so one needs to be accurate... All good fun for $200.

Thinking back many years, my best kills to cartridges ratio (7 birds for 9 cartridges) on winged game was with a single shot.
It was a little BSA .410” bolt action, one of those made using Lee Enfield bolts in a simplified tubular receiver, and with a Long Lee Enfield style safety on the cocking piece.
It had a 23” barrel, but the bolt mechanism made it handle like a 30” gun. They did a de-luxe version with a top tang safety.
2 1/2” chambered, it killed well with Winchester 1/2 ounce loads. Admittedly the birds flighting into a wood were not long range shots.

Tut, you might consider the ultra cheap Turkish singles being imported currently by Academy Sports. I have a sort of collections of American and Brit singles as well a the Beretta 'folding stock' singles. I like the Turk guns better. So do most of the avant garde TSS turkey gun supporters...Geo

I bought a wonderful Francotte solid rib single shot 12 gauge that was built with a safety. The safety was removed, but I have hopes that some day I can install a new safety. It is a high quality gun, similar to Francotte single trap guns, but not configured as a trap gun. Weighs seven pounds even with a 32" ribbed barrel. It is in about mint condition with 99% bright case colors and blue. 13 1/2" LOP with a fresh Silver pad and cheekpiece.

Tommy Tut, I know the way you think, at least I think I do. Don't buy a utility gun first because if you do you will likely have fun with it but crave a better gun. Go find a nice little wand from the get-go like this English made 16 I bought recently. You won't regret it. Here these are known as Vicar's guns, as the pay for being a Church of England minister was so pitiful that is all they could afford.
The Rectors had a much larger stipend and could afford a proper double gun...
