I showed a Francotte to a dealer recently and he could tell the barrels were bored M/F from the numbers on the underside of the barrels. They are Greek to me...I read 17.6/18.5 (right) and 17.9/18.4 (left). How do I interpret these numbers? I suppose they may be millimeters?

Millimetres - exactly.

Divide by 25.4 for inches sand the difference should show you the bore constriction in thou when it was proofed.

they are indeed millimeters - the larger number is the bore diameter (when proofed) and the smaller number is the choke diameter. multiply whose numbers by .03937 to convert to decimal inches. the easier to remember version is that a mm = 40 thousands of an inch - not exact but mighty close....so a tenth of a mm = 4 thousands. multiple the metric difference between bore and choke by 4 and you're there - in your case, 9 x 4 = 36, and 5 x 4 = 20.

belgian proofs also offer the weight of the barrel set when proofed, expressed as "0 kg 000"....whole kilograms first, with fractional kilogram following. kilogram = 2.2 pounds to convert. if you have accurate scales to weigh the barrels, their present weight may be compared to the proof - belgian rules state that a barrel set more than 3% lighter than marked is considered to be out of proof.

while i was writing this reply parabola had posted his response - the same thing, but coming from the opposite direction.

The muzzle dimension over bore (but sometimes the opposite) was used 1910 - 1924 (but some earlier guns were so marked)
Starting in 1922 there would be a lettre annale on the barrel flats, and after 1924 the barrel was usually marked CHOKE (indicating muzzle constriction > .008") and the bore only

Did you switch the numbers, and if not the greater choke was R
18.4 mm = .724" and 17.9 = .705" so .019" choke = modified
18.5 mm = .728" and 17.6 = .693" so .035" choke = full

Or "run a bore micrometer down the barrel". A lot can happen in 100 years. My latest Francotte is 126 years old. A lot can happen in 126 years.

Thanks for the dope on the barrels. I'll settle for .019 Right and .035 left as built. my bore gauge shows 0.006 right and correctly Full on the left now.
