Of all the things to look at when evaluating a 21, if it will fire a cartridge is hardly at the top of the list.

Do you only look at the top of your list of things to check when buying any gun? What is at the top of your list?

I am willing to wager you never dry fire a vintage gun in front of a dealer unless you are the seller of the gun. And most especially not in front of those unknowledgeable Cabelas people.

Perhaps I did fly off the handle. That firing pin impressions was offered as a place to start just seemed so absurd that it tripped my trigger.

I’ve not been in a Cabela’s in many years and honesty wouldn’t know where to begin should they have a 21 that caught my eye. Last time I was in one of those places everything had a trigger lock. The gun has to come apart. We need to check the ribs, that might be the first place to look. If their staff is so inexperienced, who takes the forend off and who assumes the risk? Would they know how and the care that’s required to reassemble? A modern day Cabela’s just does not seem the place to evaluate what is for most of us a large purchase.

Which brings us to why the thing might be at a Cabela’s in the first place. Since the experienced guns guys are gone, where does their stock come from? If anything requires a complete evaluation it would be one like this and it would seem to be a difficult thing to embark upon.

I didn’t intend to indicate that dry firing in the store was an option, my intent was to emphasize the robustness of the lock system and the fact that it wouldn’t go bang is highly unlikely. Checking for shrunken wood and overtightened tang screws is also wise.

Is it true they will ship a gun to a different store if you haven’t paid for it in full?

The fact that you realize you are a little bit rough is a good reason to just stick around. It'l is the guysd that donl not think they have an issue that have issues.

Yes, Cabela's really will ship a gun to another store if you have not paid for it. I do not know the full details, but a friend in Minneapolis did it with a gun that I saw in Omaha and told him about. And I have disassembled guns on their counter multiple times to look at proofs or whatever.

They get their guns the same way any other gun store does. People sell them or trade them in. They have been actively advertising that they are interested in buying used guns and collections. In fact, I sold them a 629 Mountain in .44 mag a few years back. They also take guns on commission.

They are not the Cabelas of old, but they are not the dregs of the gun world either. They beat the hell out of your average gun show. People here just want to complain about something, anything, everything and cabela's is convenient.

That's ridiculous. You shouldn't apologize for anything. If you can't tolerate the BS, maybe the problem isn't you, maybe it's the BS. Don't let anyone's "hurt feelings" cause you to second guess yourself.
