I have a couple of used guns I recently pirchased and I'm unsure if steel shot can be used in them. They ar as follows: 12 ga AyA #2, Cyl/SKT, circa 2003 20 ga Arrieta 557, IC/MOD, circa 1997

I am not an authority, so this isn't worth much. However, since you have no answers I will venture that, yes, you can shoot steel in them but not larger than 4s. Exp in the Arrieta.
These are the instructions I got with my Merkel made back in the early 90s.
You may be able to load it with larger shot and be safe, but w/o specific instructions (have you tried the importers or makers?), that is all I would do - 4s max.

Without asking the manufacuturer, I am not sure anyone can advise you. The safe answer is no steel unless the makers tell you otherwise. I would be very surprised if they did say it was okay. Building for steel shot usage is not as common other places as here in USA. Answer will depend on steel used in barrels/thickness and choking. If the guns have screw in chokes they should be steel shot designed too. Risking these guns is a bit more expensive than risking a Remington 870 express.

I have emailed AyA twice with no response. I did contact New England Custom Guns since they import AyA's and they said they don't recommend the use of steel at all.

I don't know how valuable this information is, but while visiting the Remington website I read their reply to a question on whether steel shot could be used in their Spartan doubles. They answered that it could if the gun was choked IC/C. I believe the tubes in those gun are NOT steel approved but apparently the IC/C chokes(according to Remington) suffer little from steel shot. I should mention too that the rest of the bore is chromed. Except for your modified choke (with smaller shot) you maybe ok? One of the other members here, uses steel in his older American doubles and has had no damage to his gun bores, but did note that the heavy waterfowl loads tend to crack stocks.
Best to you, Kurt

what are the the proof marks on your AyA? the Spanish guns I have seen are normally proofed to 1200 KG/CM (this is the the modern magnum proof) the Steel Shot proofed guns are Proofed to 1370 KG/CM and also carry the the steel shot proof mark and a Fleur de Lys these are considered safe with high performance steel shot
