Having just read the posts regarding "Andy's Custom Shop", I would like to recommend a familiar name to the owners of high grade shotguns.
Like many, I have had terrible experiences with gun repairs and custom work, especially when attempted by "local gunsmiths". I had a Parker Repro with single trigger problems (something broke inside) and I gave it to a local with instructions to replace the broken part. When I got the gun back, the conversation began with how he welded something inside and I just cringed. The trigger never worked again and, finally, after two years of sending the gun around the country without success, I had Howard Miller install one of his triggers in the gun. It took only $2000 to solve the problem. I sold the gun shortly after..hated the sight of it.
I have a Marlin (1968-1971)L.C. Smith that I wanted restocked. I paid a LGS $350 to inlet an old original stock that had been started. It was like a 90% that you would buy today. He did almost none of the work agreed on and, when he tried to reassemble the gun, he bent parts to try and get the gun back together. Having had many bad experiences in the past, I checked to see if the gun appeared to function properly, I put the safety on and tried to pull the trigger. Yes, it fired. I won't bore you further with the BS this guy have me. I knew enough to check the gun in front of him before leaving his shop, but was out $350.
I have a small collection of Ithaca Classic Doubles (5) that I value greatly. Occasionally, I require work done on these and other guns I hold in similar high esteem. Now, all such work goes to Gunter Pfrommer (Pfrommer Gunworks, Rocky Mount, VA). There, simply, is no one better to accomplish what I need done in a timely and professional manner.
I sent a ICD 4ES 16ga. to him last week and got it back today. I know the work was done correctly and the gun will function flawlessly. This is the only 16ga. ever made with two sets of 16ga. barrels. It is also the second half of a 16/28ga pair. It's irreplaceable.
I know that Gunter's name is not new to most. I recommend him to all those who need to send their highly valued guns out for work that will be done professionally and completed on time.
He said he planned to attend the Orvis event this weekend, by the way.
