Hello all; I juat purchased an older 20 ga. Grulla 215, and am not sure of the chokes. On the underside of the barrel flats it says- "CHOKE 14.7 15.7" And the same directly under both barrels (twice). Can anyone tell me what they are? Thanks in advance.

Ever so slightly less than .040" or what is generally termed extra full. In a 20ga. it would be considered by most to be excessive, but you will have to pattern it to see what it actually does with the loads you elect to use.

Hi Dennis:
The chokes could have been opened since the gun left the factory. This is common - especially in guns that leave the factory choked very tight. To know for sure you need to have the barrels measured with a bore gauge. Some gunsmiths have them, some do not.
Welcome to the board,
Best,
Mike

Thanks much guys. That may not be a bad thing as I will use the little gun for hunting jack rabbits for the most part. But I will pattern it to be sure. I have been using rifles and handguns for 40 years and am quite knowledgable in that arena. The shotgun thing is new and frankly the doubles have rekindled my fire for shooting. Am amazed at how they feel in the hands compaired to other shootin sticks. Looking for an affordable double rifle now. Think I'm hooked!

Dennis as long as you are already hooked I am doing no harm in eneabling you in your new addiction. Just bought a drilling - two 16 gauge barrels with a 9.3x72R barrel, made in Germany. There are also cape guns which which have one rifle and one shotgun barrel. Although very expensive there are also shotguns with rifling in the end of the barrel capable of shooting a decent shotgun pattern and a bullet. Usually they are called paradoxes. Here is a link to Bob Jones site - he has many drillings and capes: http://www.bobjonesguns.com/Best, Mike

Very nice. But you realize that I'm going to dig into my retirement to fullfill these desires. But then again I've learned long ago. . . " Lifes too short to hunt with an ugly gun!" I've just started researching doubles and thinking hard about something along the lines of a .458 Lott, and using my home grown hard cast bullets at a nice moderate velocity. I already have too many .45-70s, and I really like the longer cigar cases. Thoughts?

Dennis I don't have any experience with double rifles. I do admire them. I have a friend that has been to Africa a few times and he maintains a 470 Nitro Express double rifle is the classic big game gun.
Best,
Mike

Dennis,
You might try some Sped-R loads. They work quite well in my tight-choked German sxs. I use the Polywad Double Wides for the lower pressure but they offer a wider solection of stand spreaders.
Good luck and have fun.

Hello Dennis, and welcome to The Board.
Great to have a new member with that kind of philosophy.
As far as your chokes go, "pattern, pattern, pattern", as a member used to say. Then you can decide what to do.
