FWIW if you're thinking about refinishing the gun, soaking the stock and forend in acetone for 18-24 hours will not only remove all the old finish but should remove that black oil staining around the frame as well. Use a disposable aluminum turkey pan, about a gallon of acetone, and weigh the stock down to keep it submerged. Cover with tin foil to help control evaporation. I've stripped and de-oiled eight stocks this way and have always been very pleased with the results.

I know this is an old post but I’m looking for the correct sling to mount on it. Can anyone recommend or give me some advice on it.

Try here:

You have owned the gun for 16 years, how has it worked out?

Burch, I'll try to help a bit but the photos are very murky. We could also use photos of the water-table.

Ronchard Czieron (under the name Didier & Cie at the time) appears to have made the barrels or at least the tubes. The gun was made after PT powder was introduced in 1900 and after the ACIER COMPRIME press trademark was registered in 1904 but before the chamber markers reverted to mm... around 1924. Explanation:

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]
-- PT - Proofed for PT means made after 1900.
-- 6.5 - chamber measured in cm; means the gun was made between summer 1889 and 1924.
-- DEPOSE; ACIER COMPRIME: As Darnation said 20 years ago, Ronchard Cizeron, well known barrel maker in Saint Etienne (running hare logo) died in 1899. In July 1901 his widow amalgamated Cizeron with Didier & cie (founded by Jean Pierre Didier) with Madam Ronchard as primary stock holder. The trademark press with "acier comprimé" (compressed steel) was registered in August 1904 by Didier & Cie.

-- Malot à Reims - As JayCee mentioned 20 years ago, this is the retailer. I can't identify who this is. The French databases can be a bit finicky or maybe I haven't learned to use them yet. Could use a better photo to confirm the spelling.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]
-- GRAND PRIX incased in a circle - Have to identify what this might refer to. Cizeron won prizes.
-- Choke Bored; Perfectione. - PF: PF could be the barrel borer or choke borer. Cannot identify him.
-- Rampant Dinosaur poinçon: I have seen this stamp. It is definitely not Ronchard Cizeron which was a running bunny. I didn't record it in a place I can find on my computer will continue to look:

As for strap, I can't help. Not sure it's so important. As Larry mentioned that is an unusual stock, more Germanic and rifle-like. It has more a straight up pistol grip and not the French half grip.

You don’t have to spend a bunch of money for a sling, either. I have one of these cheapies on an early Halifax that I didn’t think I needed a $100 sling on, as I remove it from time to time, and didn’t want to worry about losing it:

Salut,
[Linked Image from i.goopics.net]

Il est possible que la marque au faisan soit une marque de Ronchard-Cizeron.
Je l'ai vue une dizaine de fois sur des canons de fusil, et à chaque fois c'était des canons Ronchard-Cizeron.

Ah merci Fab. Excellent et Bonne Année. (Note that FAB identifies the mark as a pheasant and that it was possibly used by Ronchard Cizeron.

Quand je pense au poinçon de Ronchard Cizeron, je pense au "lapin qui court."

I have been informed that my description of the running rabbit symbol in French is silly, kind of the equivalent of a "hopping bunny." It should be "lièvre en plein course" = "running hare" The difference being you don't hunt bunnies or rabbits; you raise and eat them. You do shoot hares.

Hello Burch,

Great new additions to the original post!

Thank you for this trip down memory lane!

Great to know that you have given life to a nice shooter.
