a friend has a ranger 20 ga sxs that he wants to get a new stock for, it's a family gun that he wants to restore.can anyone tell me if this is a stevens 311? and if a 12 gauge stock will fit, i see a few 12 gauge stocks for sale but nothing in 20 - my guess is that since it's a low end gun that they are interchangeable.
If anyone know where i can get stock for a good price, that would be appreciated as well.

thank you,

Scott

My Stevens 5100 20 ga has "Ranger 101.6" stamped on the side. If it's a 5100 it's usually stamped on the right side. I believe the pin arrangement is different on the 5100 and 311. The 5100 has the lower pin closer to the stock.

I do not know if the stocks for 12 and 20 ga are interchangable.

Good luck.

Sears sold many "Ranger" marked shotguns and rifles between about 1926 and 1950. Side by side shotguns included Model 101.2 – Savage 238, Model 101.3 – Fulton Special, and 101.8 – Stevens 83. Model 103.7 was offered in 1936 and was a Marlin 90 O/U. Hunter Arms made 104.3 Rangers were usually marked "Precision" or "Precision Grade" and had twin beads, a capped pistol grip, and a Ranger-marked recoil pad.

Easy to tell if it's a Fulton and not a Stevens. A Fulton will have 3 large slotted screws set in the bottom of the receiver, in a triangular arrangement. If it doesn't have those, then it's likely to be a Stevens--although I think we also confirmed in the past that there were some Nitro Specials sold under the Ranger name. (I've never seen one of those, but I have seen several Ranger-marked Fultons.)

I have no record of a Nitro being sold as a Ranger. I don't think it happened.

Wasn't it the Ithaca "Long Range" that was marketed by Sears or Montgomery Ward?...Geo

Gunstocks inc. has both 311 and 5100 stocks and in specific gauges they also explain how to tell the difference on another page. here is a link

The Montgomery Wards guns were marked "Western Field=M.W.&Co." The one that's floating all over the internet was made two years before the Western Long Range was in production.

Tom;
I am not certain, but think you may be thinking of the Stevens 315 rather than the 311. The 315 models will normally have a 1915 patent date on them I beleieve & are striker fired rather than having internal hammers. These can be readily identified by the rear pin (sear) being higher in the frame than the front pin, (cocking lever). As I recall on the 5100/311 models the hammers & cocking lever are hinged on the same forward pin & the sears are hinged low in the frame behind behind them.

Walter, you could very well be right. I'm pretty sure someone here claimed to have seen a Ranger-marked Nitro, but it was some time ago. As I said, I have not seen one.
