Recently someone provided a link to a company that makes truck vault type cases for the floor of your truck or SUV. I have searched this board but can not find the reference again.
This site sold aluminum cases rather than wood or stainless and they appeared much lighter than the classic truck vault. They appeared to be selling to police departments as well as sportsmen.
I would certainly appreciate some help here! Dr.P

But in reading their site, they say it's not designed to create a new floor. The Truck Vault system does create a new floor. http://www.truckvault.com/

Thank you Chuck! I am going to give Tactical Storage Systems a call and see if putting a piece of plywood over the their aluminum box is sufficient to distribute a couple of hundred pounds of luggage/dogs. The Truck Vault System is nice but very heavy and a good bit more expensive. Actually from their website, it looks like these boxes can handle plenty of weight:
TSS is designed for an interior installation. Our standard models maximum length is 60'' and width is 48". A TSS module is not designed to create a second floor in the truck bed. Rather it is designed to mount in the truck either on a permanent basis or provide the ability to install and remove based on the season and the need. It is lighter weight than other makes because of the aluminum construction and will help with the payload capacity of your truck as well as improve gas mileage. It is built to withstand singnificant weight on top without hampering its operation. The tie downs come in handy for securing additional payload on top.
I would think that an important aspect of strength would be the ability to crawl over the drawers to get at stuff out of hands reach. You should talk to them and find that out. I would think a sheet of plywood would allow this but would add some weight negating the aluminum weight savings.
So many guns, so little time!

They look very nice but are too expensive for my budget. I also wonder what happens to the guns when the dog above takes a leak or spills his water bowl. If you're talented along that line, why not make your own? I just got my new Toyota Tacoma and will be adding a Leer tonneau cover. One other thing to think about with this sort of drawer setup is that there is a lot of wasted space. The second floor aspect is nice but you could just build a second floor out of plywood and slide your guns underneath.

I was never so happy to get rid of the Leer fiberglass tonneau cover I had....No seal what so ever sent it back to them once. With it closed I bet I could've took a leak in bed of the truck. Leer even had the gonades to threaten to charge me if I sent it back and it wasn't their fault. They didn't charge me but they didn't solve the problem either. As a reminder it rubbed the paint to the metal in several places on the bed of my truck. Leer..humbug.

I've had 2 SnugTop shells and I've been very pleased with them. They also make tonneau covers. Jim, they're made in Long Beach right off the Long Bch freeway and PCH. Dealers are all over So.Cal and probably Vegas. My recollection was that they have a lifetime warranty. I had some cracks develop on one a few yrs after I bought it. They took it off and fixed it with a new paintjob and seals for free.

If you are going the plywood route and make your own, how about those under the bed plastic storage containers with wheels. I wonder what size they come in. I would think you would use a soft case or sock on the gun in any case cause it will bounce and slide around.
A half inch sheet of plywood with an open span of 24" will support a person standing on it.
So many guns, so little time!

Snug Top makes the best shells in the business, but their quality is inconsistent and their customer service is nonexistent. I have had three of their shells, and even though they have pi$$ed me off something awful, I still bought another one because of the design and the feature combinations.
For a gun drawer, I had mine made up by Ainley Kennels and Fabrication in Iowa (I'm in CA). Aluminum and stainless, completely custom to my specs, less expensive than any competitive product, fabulous quality. Will take as much weight as I'm ever likely to put on top of it. Because they are a kennel manufacturer, they know how to build the drawers with lips and seals so that miscellaneous liquids emanating from your pooch do not enter the drawer when the kennel is on top of the drawer. Highly recommended.
You might also look at Hagerstown Metal Fabricators in MD. Looks like good stuff, and I was going to buy one of their stock units until I discovered Ainley. Did I mention that I really like Ainley?
