How about a chrome plated Luger, arty model, matching serial numbers, with a sholder stock to which some one had added a white line recoil pad. That was one very sad looking gun that had been owned by one Gomer Pyle-Duffus. He was so proud of that sucker that he showed to it all his buddies. Said that it was easy to care for now. No more of that bluing to rust and he thought the pad looked as good as it felt. Must have been some real heavy recoil with that 9mm.

A friend has an old sxs boxlock hammergun with twist barrels that belonged to his grandfather. His grandfather had cut the muzzles lengthwise with a hacksaw for about 1 1/2" to 2", squeezed them together in a vice and welded them back together to tighted up the choke.
Cody Funniest thing about Cody's "stupidest thing" story is that it probably worked to some extent. Good story! JL

A friend who claims to have been a "gunsmith", for some years, repaired his cracked SKB trapgun forend with epoxy and fiberglas cloth ON THE OUTSIDE!

Agree with Mr. Legg.......
Cody and Dave give good examples of "neccesity being the mother of invention" (or somthing like that?)......blessed as well with the particular individuals skill, understanding of the objective...... or just plain luck!
Great bits of personal history.

The gun that comes to mind is a hammer double owned by a friend's grandfather. It had seen very hard times and was missing the underbolt that slides into the lump as well as the greener cross bolt. It was held shut by a large nail on a string (so you didn't lose the nail). He had lost one hammer screw so held that on with brazing and the little tit on the mainspring had broken off so the mainspring was welded to the sideplate. He had also bound a wooden rib to the top of the barrels (with string) and soldered a sheet metal (read bean tin) rifle type sight to the back of the barrels. He apparently was an avid hunter and I am under the impression that he shot the gun a lot prior to his death of old age.
cheers Doug

Mine was a Parker the a thief cut the barrels off just in front of the forend and the stock just behund the pistol grip to use as a hold-up gun. The real sad thing was that it was a all floral and scroll BHE, no saftey, serial 161xxx. I had John Foster do the barrels and rib, restocked it then foolishly sold it. Jim

I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong

Shooting 3&1/4 dram 1&1/4 oz modern ammo through a Baker R grade with damascus barrels and still doing it as of this past week end! Polishing out the damascus pattern of the same gun and blueing it. Polishing receiver 0f same gun. Same guy, different gun, grinding away a very nice case finish to make a silver receiver.
Different guy: glueing the barrel and receiver of a model 70 winchester to the stock with some kind of window putty!? He was trying to bed the action!
Saw 10 perfectly good inches off a sauer sxs.

Gun being left to rot in a safe (especially one w/o a dessicant substance). May I suggest collecting stamps and/or coins?
