Craig........nice barrels! Are they brown, where you expecting more contrast? Did you use the Pilkingtons and ferroic mixture? If so how much of each? I may experiment with the two also.
Thanks!

Battle,

I did use a mixture to get the brown. These barrels were not boiled.
I did mess with the contrast, and found that if I etched at the point they are at now, they would lose their brown hue and look silver from a distance because the pattern is so fine. I was happy to be able to keep a nice overall color and also able to see the entire pattern. It was a fine line...

I am having a very difficult time getting Browns. I have used
Gaddy's, An Old English and Ordnance 1841 and still getting
blue-black before boiling. Any Ideas Battle, Tom or anyone ?

Try diluting your solution with distilled water, applying a thinner layer of agent, or cutting back on the humidity while rusting. If none of this works,[and it should], try Pilkington's. I've had no problems getting yellows, browns, or reds, if I slowed the rusting process a bit. Even with Laurel Mt., which is quite aggressive.
You mention "before boiling". I'm going to ask a dumb question. You're not boiling your "brown" barrels?
Jim
