I did mess with the contrast, and found that if I etched at the point they are at now, they would lose their brown hue and look silver from a distance because the pattern is so fine. I was happy to be able to keep a nice overall color and also able to see the entire pattern. It was a fine line...

If none of this works,[and it should], try Pilkington's. I've had no problems getting yellows, browns, or reds, if I slowed the rusting process a bit. Even with Laurel Mt., which is quite aggressive. You mention "before boiling". I'm going to ask a dumb question. You're not boiling your "brown" barrels? Jim
