Notes
Reportedly, the firm was established in 1866 at 36 Union Street, Inverness, but this date has not been confirmed. A gun case label dated to about 1918 states that the firm was established in 1899.
Reportedly, in 1898 an employee, John Milne, bought the business.
In about 1913 the firm moved to 14 Union Street.
In about 1922 John Milne died and his son, Ian Milne, took over.
Between 1960 and 1984 the firm moved to 30 Union Street and from the 1980s gradually ceased dealing in guns and rifles but increasingly dealt in telescopes.
Reportedly, the firm ceased trading in 1989, but they obviously restarted as they are currently trading as Gray & Co at Cromarty, The Black Isle, Ross-shire. See Thompson & Campbell Ltd in the "Gun Suppliers" database on the main menu.
Other Info
The firm sold cartridges under the names "Pegamoid Waterproof", "Gastight", and "Autokill".
