My attempts to google an answer were unproductive. Is there something I can use on the exterior of damascus barrels to remove light surface rust without damaging the damascus pattern remaining. Sorry if this has been covered already.

No. The brown contrasting pattern is a form of rust. You can use 0000 steel wool with hoppes #9 but you will take off some of the browning.

Thanks Mike, thats what I thought. I'm looking at an Ithaca Crass, 32" barrels, Quality 2, s/n 35xxx, 1898 vintage I believe. A nice old Ithaca but not a shooter.

I believe the Ithaca Crass had 'black & white' finish as opposed to browning. Maybe Walt Snyder can help here as I only have the one gun (a Grade 2 Crass) that has been refinished.

KleenBore Formula 3 Gun Conditioner and 0000 steel wool works well also, but as Mike said, some of the contrast in the pattern will be lost.

Mike,
Sorry for the snap. I thought it might help to know the orig finish in order to decide what treatment to do.

If it is brown now but was b&w originally, possibly boiling first to convert to black, then the steelwool treatment.

I use white board chalk sticks in combination with any oil to remove light rust film from damascus or steel barrels. First coat the barrels with a light film of oil. Next rub the exterior of the barrels, focusing on the rusted areas, but for preference the entire surface, with the chalk stick. You will soon see that the rust is lifted by the chalk sticks without damage to the barrel pattern/finish. Wipe clean with a soft rag and repeat as required. If the problem is pronounced you may have to repeat for several days until all of the rust has been removed. This is a very old trade process used to polish metal. In my experience the results can be surprisingly good. Please note this method will not remove sub-surface pits.
