Saw a photo of a new buttstock in process which raised my curiosity about the process. If you were to custom build/order a shotgun with a specific cast on/off preference, what option is the "right" way to execute;
(1) create straight stock blank and bend later
(2) carve the blank with cast as part of finished stock

One can always argue stocks should start life straight for benefit of future users who may wish to modify the cast. But cheekpieces are always put into the original stock - so why not cast?

Indeed, why not? I do. I think, by far, most are carved to a cast off/on perscription.

Choice (2), absolutely. I wouldn't even consider a "future user" in my plans for a custom stock. That's for me.

A Custom stock, like a hand-made suit is made for the person commissioning the stock.Remember God made righthanded people and perfected his craft and made the rest perfect.

LOL when I read that one. But, seriously, I knew an individual that could shoot (and write, and golf) equal in all aspects with either hand! Kinda makes one wonder if he was a priest in a former life...Oh yea, the stock is made for the hand that paid the bill, no bending later.
Best,
Ted
