I need help identifying a H&H Double rifle I have in my possession. It also has various reloading tools that I can't ID. Would appreciate any help I can get.

I have put a page on line with the info I do have on the gun plus pictures..

Thanks

NitroExpress.com might be the place for this.

Bernie: You have what appears to be a H&H Royal Double Rifle in .500 Black Powder Express. The gun has a Jones underlever (quite typical for an 1880's gun) The hinged express sights are regulated for various distances (I don't know what the hinged sight on the muzzle is). The tools, turnscrew, etc. are compatible with the gun. There would have been a trunk case with a charge card with the gun originally.

You can order a letter from H&H (I think for about 30 GB Pounds) that will give you some history & the original measurements along with the caliber of the gun. Their address is:

Holland and Holland
33 Bruton Street
LONDON, UK
W1J 6HH
Tel: 011 44 20 7499 4411
FAX: 011 44 20 7408 7962
E-mail: gunroomuk@hollandandholland.com

I hope this helps.

Best Regards, George

Nice gun...could the folding front sight be for close quarters ?

I noticed you said you couldn't open it...The under lever should swing to the side to drop the barrels.

.500 3-1/4" Black Powder Express by the tools and marks. The front sight has a flip up "night sight", a larger brighter bead useful in low-light or fast close-quarters situations. Looks like it's in pretty nice shape, and the tools are a real plus. The underlever swings to the right to open the action.

Thanks everyone for the information... keep it coming guys. I've learned more on this site about this gun in 1 hour than I have the past week searching the web.

If anyone else has something to share, please post it..

Thanks again.

Fulton-

Take your request to nitroexpress.com
There you will find the highest standard of accountable information on the web in regards to double rifles.

I agree with the above notes that what you have there is a Black Powder Express rifle.
The lever under the trigger guard rotates to the right of the gun to get the action open.

If it's stuck, don't force it.

The rifle seems to have been refinished at least once, and the work was not nearly to the standard of the rifle's maker.
It also appears as if the stock has been cut and re-lengthened at some time.

If you can get it running properly - and I warn you, there are very few men here in the US who are qualified to work on that gun (JJ Perodeau of Champlin Arms is at the top of the heap, google him) and if you allow anyone besides an absolute top-notch professional Double-Rifle mechanic or Gunbuilder work on it you stand to loose a lot of value, and likely the possibility of the successful function of that very nice H&H rifle.

Hammerless Back-action Sidelock Jones Underlever guns and rifles are relatively rare, that lever is somewhat 'spring loaded' in that it's not only unbolting the barrels, but it's also cocking both of the locks.

Be careful, learn more about what you have, and listen closely to what you're hearing about that nice old rifle.

Looks to be a Holland No. 2 Grade Hammerless LOG rifle in .500 3 1/4" Express. It's a black powder gun. The charge marked is the 136 grains of black that was normal for that cartridge, which most commonly used a 440 grain lead bullet. It's a useful cartridge, and pleasant to shoot.

The flip-up front sight is variously called a "moon" or "gloaming" bead. It's intended for use in low light. I've found them to work quite well.

Again, thanks everyone for your help.

Now I'm starting to scratch my head. When this rifle came into my possession, I didn't think much about it... it was just an old gun. Now "Tinker" is advising me to "be careful" with this old rifle.

Does anyone have a feel for just how old this rifle is and what its worth might be??

If you provide a serial number I can tell you when it was made.
