Looks like quarter-sawn poplar. Needs a restock in good old American Kevlar (Juglans Plastica).

"The wood!" was also my first thought. "The wood looks worm-eaten." [wood beetle larvae].However, I can't really tell from the photo 'vas ist loss", so await the report, with the other guessers here.

my guess is due to Barry's location,a horse took a roll on it?
That lower tang needed some help to get bent like that.

Fungus never bent a lower tang like that one is bent. Bad spill or big fall must have happened. Good job for a stocker.

Fungus didn't bend it, whatever brought about the final breaking of the stock bent the tang. I'm sure all of us speculators will find out shortly what really happenend. But I do know that something in the wood doesn't look right. There should be crisp and sharp points to the broken wood, this doesn't have it.
I have a very old pantry box with lid, that has remenants of powder post beetles, and they are mainly in the wood not on it.
