Other then fantasies as a kid, when did I ever talk about hosing down birds with a punt gun, have we forgotten that such use in the US woiuld be illegal. I just thought it'd be fun to build and shoot one at targets (simulated flocks of birds) though shooting at one of those huge fall starling flocks would be interesting. I used to be the neighborhood pyrotechnics builder when I was a kid, I guess that's something you never completely outgrow. Steve

Steve- I'm still solidly in fantasiesville with the 'one shot/family reunion fed' notion. It would definitely be cool though! I used to be the neighborhood pyrotechnics builder when I was a kid, I guess that's something you never completely outgrow Or live down! --Tinker

HomelessJoe & George L, Nobody as far as I am aware EVER said puntgunning was a sport. Puntgunning was and still is market hunting.Carried out here in the UK by a few dedicated traditionalists. If you have no knowledge of a subject, I have found it is better to listen than to comment.

This is one time you shouldve followed your own advice.
I don't look up or down on people that did it a 100 years ago to make a living to feed their family.
One thing for sure no Sportsman would "look up" to a nimrod in modern times that does it so he can go to the local pub at night and brag about the great shots with his punt gun on sitting ducks while the rest of you sit around and goggle over it.
Sometimes I wonder about you English chaps.

HJ I've hung with some punters in England for awhile. The largest take on one shot, (in the 6 years that I was there), was 25 ducks. If a punter is really lucky he might get one shot in a days outing. Usually it was one shot in two outings average. It's not as easy as just paddling up to a flock and letting loose, lots of things have to be just right and the planets have to align. Most do it just to keep a tradition alive not to brag on large pots. How many nimrods have you heard bragging about their exploits in the local pub? Another example of "let me push my beliefs on something I know nothing about".

Joe I didn't say I know all about it. How much experience do you have?

Are we going to pull out our punts and compare... I've read quite a bit about it and I do have some common sense.... On first hand experience...you win hands down. yOu "hung with some punters".

If you agree with the lead shot ban - then you'd not be down with punt gunning.

What really killed the "Punt Gun" in the US was the Winchester 97 & the Browning A-5. There was virtually no resistence to outlawing them as hardly anyone was still using them anyway. This same legislation also outlawed the few sporting 8ga's in use. Accounts of this can be found by reading Nash Buckingham's works on the subject, & he was there when it was transpiring. The 97 Winnie put the ability to kill scads of ducks into the hands of "Hordes" of people who would never have owned a "Punt Gun", yet we do not look down on them as an unsporting gun.
