I've got an 1883 in my collection that I bought as a future project. The metal work has remained surprisingly good, but the stock is lost to history and someone fitted it with a bad replacement (fortunately they didn't mess up the metal). In any event, I think it is a grade 3 (could be mistaken) and I intend to send for a letter on it at some point. It does have the matted ribs and there are some initials engraved in the upper tang.
