Some fella in Maine what's claims to work on guns asked for some advice. P. Webley 12b found behind a plaster wall in a house in Boothbay Harbor. Customer wanted to know if this gun is "OUT OF PROOF"???

I would say the proof status of this particular firearm is highly questionable.

If that's the only problem this might be a good candidate for either sleeving or sub gauge inserts. You always have to wonder how a gun like this one ended up behind a wall?

A gun over one hundred years old needs to be re-proofed by Brit law?

Bit of a shame. From what the pictures show, it was walled up in pretty new condition. Look at the screw heads and the checkering. Shame that left barrel seems to have served as a gutter run off.

Maybe he should send it to Sherman Bell for a test with Proof loads. As we all know from reading his articles in DGJ it will probably surprise us.

What does "proof" actually specify? If it has not been honed out, if it has not been otherwise altered, if it remains tight, it could theoretically be still in proof; pits may be enough to render it out.
That may clean up quite well.
