I was rummaging around looking at guns the other day and came across a beautiful English stocked underlever double that was marked "Richards Superior Laminated Steel London" on the rib, and "Richards" on the sideplates. Almost every square inch on the receiver and hammers is engraved, and it certainly looks to be a high quality double, certainly as compared with the various immitations such as W Richards from Belgium. I can try to post a picture later if that would be of assistance. Can anyone give me a clue if this is a true Westley Richards? Did they mark their guns in this way?

Thanks!

It may well be a fine shotgun, but it's not a Westley Richards. Some photos, expecially of the water table and barrel flats (showing the proofing) will help.

Westley Richards always and only marked their gun "Westley Richards." Check closely for W. Richards of Preston/Liverpool (William Richards). He supplied a fair number of high grade guns.

I'm not sure I'm seeing the same gun you're referring to, the images you linked us to show the top and side of a gun marked with the name you noted, but it has very little engraving, only simple border engraving and no area coverage.

It appears to be a pinfire shotgun re-worked into centerfire some time after it was originally built.

Show images of the undersides of the barrels and the surfaces of the action where the barrel flats and breeches mate up to - often called the 'action flats' or 'water table' and the 'standing breech' or 'standing breeches'

I want to see the makers and proof marks on the barrels, the locking system (how the barrels fit up to and secure to the gun for firing), the firing pin tips, and close-up images of the barrel breech and tops of the chamber area of the barrels.

I am working on getting pictures of the barrel flats and water table. Here is the link to where I found the double, since its on GB I'm sure most of ya'll have already seen it http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=105293673

As for the engraving, perhaps my eyes are deceiving me, but in the pictures it appears to have a significant engraving, but perhaps I am just seeing the patina. I thought it looked interesting because I have never had an underlever before, and it looks like a higher grade then the other doubles I have.

It's not a Westley and it doesn't have full engraving. I'd say it was a W Westley from England not Belgium. Look at the drop on it. Ouch.
