These barrels had a good portion of the original finish left on them, and you could see a pattern, but they were finished so it was not obvious that the barrels were different.

I think these days, we generally like to produce a finish that has more contrast.

Paul, you are exactly right. I enjoy doing this as much as anything. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I love bringing the patterns come out.
I have done black and white with good results. The logwood dye really brings out the pattern.
