I have a chance to buy a W.C. Scott 12 ga hammer gun, sleeved by Westley Richards, about 30 inch barrels. 75% fine scroll engraved with small game scenes in ovals on locks and triggerplate. The game scenes are well done with great artistry. SN is 9055, 3 1/4 tons proof, original 2 3/4 chambers. The barrel sleeving was done using the "monobloc" system, so the markings on the barrel flats are from the original build. Extractors, fancy wood, fancy sculpted hammers. In fact it appears the gun was built as an upscale live pigeon gun. The barrels ring very true, a small chip out of the splinter forearm wood, some slight dents and scratches on the buttstock. Although I couldn't measure the stock, the gun fit just like my Chas. Lancaster live pigeon gun. Pictures are at http://www.collectorsfirearms.com/admin/product_details.php?itemID=570Can anyone help me as to when the gun may have been built and the approximate value of the gun? I can get the shotgun for $3250. Thank you for any help. Jim Haynes

I was under the impression that 'sleaving' decreased a guns value. In this case it seems to have increased it's value. I think it's over priced by about $1500. L.F.

Jim: I'd say Joe's got the price right. That might make a nice duck gun (the chokes aren't published, but I'll assume there is some, since it has newer tubes) if you can live with about 3.5 inches of drop. There are many fabulous, all-original hammerguns out there for $3,500, but that isn't one of them. I'd keep looking. TT

Westley Richards made a dog's breakfast of some sleeving jobs they did in the '60s and '70s. you can see the line on this from ten yards away. They also tended to stamp their name and the word 'SLEEVED' on the tubes rather than hidden away on the barrel flats.
The original quality of the gun looks good but it is overpriced.Tig welding and re-bluing would do it a favour to disguise the sleeving.
Make sure the forend fits properly, as this is often a problem where barrels have not been fully struck up after sleeving.

Looks like A LOT of drop in the stock (??)
Agree with the comments on the sleeving job. I have a Scott hammer pigeon gun and love it, but the sleeving job on this one and the stock drop would make me real nervous for the price.

That chunk of wood out of the forearm kills it for me.

Ditto all the above. Scotts are well made guns but the stock drop, the sleeving and most of all the price scare me off. The price is about twice what it's worth, IMO. If you can shoot it with that much drop and buy it, you will see the best, most careful packing from them I've ever seen. I bought a Bonehill 2 barrel set from them a couple years ago. It was not as described so I sent it back with no problem. But I was amazed at the wonderful packing job the lady in the shipping dept. did.

Jim I have looked at this gun myself and the wood missing form the forend and the barrels that seem to be to short kill it for me. I think the sleeving is substandard as well. There are other hammer guns out there that are a better deal. Regards, Gordon
