Thanks everyone...

These barrels had a good portion of the original finish left on them, and you could see a pattern, but they were finished so it was not obvious that the barrels were different.

I think these days, we generally like to produce a finish that has more contrast.

"there is nothing more enjoyable than getting a pair of worn barrels in cleaning them off and then watching the pattern come up."

Paul, you are exactly right. I enjoy doing this as much as anything. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I love bringing the patterns come out.
I have done black and white with good results. The logwood dye really brings out the pattern.

Thanks again,
Craig

Thanks Craig, and I was wrong Both barrels are Four iron, and I have NO idea as to the name of the left barrel pattern, but it's similar to this Bonehill

I added that pic to the 'English Damascus' PictureTrail album

Lancaster?
Left barrel - oval rifling
Right barrel - smooth.

Name? How about manufacturing defect? It looks like the same pattern on both barrels, but something went sour with the billet. The twist per millimeter is off as well, but they both appear to be crolle. If both barrels were originally completely browned (not showing any pattern) no one would even care.

In all honesty, I am surprised more seconds have not survived.

Thanks Chris... Hope to see you at the Vintagers.

I'm not sure if it is a second. I did a set of barrels for Chris that are identical to the left barrel. Very fine crolle.
Seeing that this gun is fairly late for damascus, perhaps Lancaster was using up the tubes that they had. The original finish was the same color I acheived, but the pattern did not show like it does now, and you could not tell that the barrels were different unless you looked at them real close.

Did some more searching and found another example of the left pattern. Bob Beach sent me this probably A grade Baker, but with very fine four iron crolle likely special order barrels

This Paragon has a somewhat similar pattern, but is three iron

It's likely a varient of 'Turkish' damascus but I sure wish I knew what the British called it. See http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dfg2hmx7_221fst4kndq

Craig,
I won't be at the Vintagers this year. But you better start practicing with your 8 for next year at Hidden Hollow.
I need to talk to you about the black and white work.
Chris
